PROJECTS

The Mother
1985-2024

This project began in 1985 when I first took a photograph of my sister-in-law standing in the doorway of her farmhouse in Shoreham, Vermont. The next year I decided to photograph her in the same place, while holding her first child. So began a series of images that continued (with a few unintended gaps) for almost four decades.

While my primary focus was on my sister-in-law, it soon became clear that her children were going to be part of this annual ritual. There were, however, years when some, or even all, of the kids were missing, as activities and commitments beyond the farm called as they grew up.

By the fall of 2024, the farm had passed the farm to one of the children and my brother and sister-in-law were ready to move into a smaller house nearby. It seemed fitting to conclude the series with the last summer that my sister-in-law was living in the farmhouse where her experience of motherhood had begun.

This project was also made into an artist’s book in 2024, the PDF version of which can be viewed by downloading here.
