The creation of each picture in the "Birth & Death" series was accomplished in various stages. For most pieces, the artist initially made a rough drawing of a visual idea. She then used a 35mm camera to photograph the pictorial elements needed to realize that idea. Portions of the resulting negatives were enlarged onto litho film to create positives. Many areas of the film were developed by selectively painting developer onto the emulsion side, rather than submerging the whole piece.

The useful sections of each film positive were cut out with scissors and a surgical knife, collaged together, and rephotographed on a light table using a view camera. Exposures were made onto the photo linen by suspending the prepared fabric on the darkroom wall and projecting the 4"x5" negative image onto it.
